## How Telegram links work

> A Telegram link is https://t.me/ followed by a public username. It opens Telegram on that account, group, channel or bot. Add ?text= with a URL-encoded message and Telegram types it into the message box, when the person can write in that chat. For a bot, add ?start= with a parameter of up to 64 letters, digits, underscores or hyphens; the bot receives it when the person taps Start.

1. **Choose who the link opens.** A person or business account, or a bot.
2. **Enter the username.** With or without the @. You need a public username; set one in Telegram’s settings first.
3. **Add a draft message or a start parameter.** A draft message for an account, a start parameter for a bot. Both are optional.
4. **Test it and share it.** Open the link on your phone, then copy it, download the QR code or add the button to your website.

Replace the usernames with yours. Spaces and punctuation in a message must be URL-encoded; the tool does that for you.

A start parameter is how a bot knows which page, ad or campaign a person came from: the bot receives “/start website_pricing” and can reply to match. Use a different parameter in each place you share the link.

## Common mistakes

- No public username. Without one there is no t.me link to your account.
- Expecting a draft message on a channel. Telegram types it only where the person can write.
- Putting spaces or other characters in a start parameter. Only letters, digits, _ and - are allowed.
- Putting a private value, such as an email address, in a start parameter. Anyone can read the link.
- Forgetting that a public username lets anyone who finds it message you, even without your phone number.
