## How a WhatsApp QR code works

> A WhatsApp QR code holds a click-to-chat link: https://wa.me/ with your full number in international format, and optionally ?text= with a first message. Scanning it with a phone camera opens WhatsApp on a chat with you, message filled in. It is a static code: no tracking, no expiry and no account. It keeps working as long as the number stays on WhatsApp.

1. **Enter your number.** Choose the country and type the number as you write it locally. The tool adds the country code.
2. **Add a first message.** Optional, but useful: say where the code is, so you know which poster or package the chat came from.
3. **Scan it before you download.** Point two different phones at the code on your screen. Each should open WhatsApp on a chat with your number and the message filled in.
4. **Download and print a test copy.** Use SVG for print and PNG for the web. Print one copy at the final size and scan it from where customers will stand.

## Where to put it, and what message to pre-fill

A different first message for each place tells you which one brings chats. Copy one, replace the [square-bracket] slots, and paste it into the form.

## PNG or SVG?

**SVG**
- Scales to any size without blur.
- Best for print: posters, packaging, signs.
- Opens in most design tools, so a designer can place it on artwork.

**PNG**
- A fixed-size image.
- Best for a website, an email or social posts.
- Do not stretch it for print; download SVG instead.

## Before you print a thousand copies

- Scan the printed test copy with an iPhone camera and an Android camera.
- Check the chat opens on the right number, with the message you meant.
- Keep the code dark on a light background. Inverted or low-contrast codes scan badly.
- Leave a plain margin around it. Text or a border pressed against the code can stop it scanning.
- Print a line beside it, such as “Scan to chat on WhatsApp”, so people know what it does.
- If the number may change, use one you will keep. A printed code cannot be edited.
