How to Add a Chatbot to Squarespace (Step by Step)

Paste the chatbot's script into Footer Code Injection on a Core, Plus or Advanced plan. Exact click path, one-page options and fixes when it won't show.

TL;DR: To add a chatbot to Squarespace, copy the chatbot's embed script and paste it into the Footer field of Code Injection (Website > Pages > Website Tools > Code Injection), then save. Code Injection needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan; the Personal plan cannot run third-party chatbot scripts. If the widget doesn't appear, check it in a logged-out window, because Squarespace often hides custom code while you are logged in.

A chatbot for Squarespace is a chat widget from a third-party provider that you add to your site with a short JavaScript snippet. Squarespace has no built-in AI chatbot for visitors, so every option, from an AI bot trained on your pages to a live chat inbox, is installed the same way: through Code Injection for the whole site, or a Code Block for a single page. The steps below work on Squarespace version 7.1 and note where 7.0 differs.

Which Squarespace plans can run a chatbot?

A Squarespace plan can run a chatbot only if it allows custom JavaScript, which means Core, Plus or Advanced. Squarespace's help centre states that Code Injection "is available in the Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy billing plans," and that adding JavaScript or an iframe to a Code Block also needs Core, Plus or Advanced (Squarespace: Using code injection, Squarespace: Code blocks).

CoreYesYesYes
PlusYesYesYes
AdvancedYesYesYes

Squarespace's own pricing page lists Code Injection as the place to add "live chat services," so a chatbot script is an intended use, not a hack (Squarespace pricing).

What do you need before you start?

You need three things before touching Squarespace:

  • A chatbot account with an embed snippet: a <script> tag the provider gives you after you create the bot. It usually contains a site or project ID in an attribute such as data-site-id, and a defer attribute so it loads after the page.
  • Administrator or website-editor access to the Squarespace site.
  • A list of pages where the bot should not appear, such as a password page or a booking flow, if any.

A typical snippet looks like this. The domain and ID below are placeholders; use the exact code your provider shows.

``html <script src="https://widget.example-chat.com/loader.js" data-site-id="YOUR_SITE_ID" defer></script> ``

How do you add a chatbot to Squarespace?

For the whole site, add the snippet to the Footer field of Code Injection. Footer code loads before the closing </body> tag, so the page content appears first and the chat bubble loads after it.

  1. In your Squarespace dashboard, open Website, then Pages.
  2. Scroll to Not Linked and click Website Tools (shown as Custom Code on some accounts), then Code Injection (Beyondspace: finding Code Injection). On version 7.0, the path is Settings > Advanced > Code Injection.
  3. Paste the full snippet into the Footer field. Keep the <script></script> tags: Squarespace requires JavaScript in Code Injection to be wrapped in them.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open your site in a private or incognito window and look for the chat bubble, usually in the bottom-right corner.
  6. Send a test message and confirm it reaches your chatbot's inbox or dashboard.

Use the Header field only if the provider tells you to. Header code is injected into <head> on every page and can delay how quickly the page renders.

Adding it to one page instead

To limit the bot to one page, use Page Header Code Injection or a Code Block. This suits a bot that only handles one job, such as a booking FAQ on the Services page.

  • Page Header Code Injection: hover over the page in the Pages panel, click the gear icon, choose Advanced, paste the script and save. The code goes into that page's <head> only.
  • Code Block: edit the page, click Add block, choose Code, set Mode to HTML and paste the script. A Code Block set to JavaScript shows your code as text instead of running it, so the mode matters. A Code Block holds up to 400 KB, about 300,000 characters, which is far more than any chat snippet.

Squarespace notes that page-level injection does not appear on Index landing pages, and that no custom code runs on checkout pages. A chatbot cannot be placed inside Squarespace checkout.

Why is my chatbot not showing on Squarespace?

A chatbot is usually missing for one of five reasons, all documented by Squarespace:

SymptomCauseFix
Bubble missing only while you editSquarespace hides some custom code when you're logged inCheck in a logged-out or incognito window, or use Preview in Safe Mode
Script shows as text on the pageCode Block mode is JavaScript or Plain TextSwitch Mode to HTML, keep the <script> tags
Nothing in Code Injection menuSite is on the Personal planUpgrade to Core or higher
Works on some pages, not othersIndex page or Ajax loadingMove the code to Footer Code Injection; turn off Ajax loading in 7.0 templates
Editor freezes after savingA broken script blocks the editorDisable scripts in preview, then remove or fix the code

Squarespace's support team does not troubleshoot third-party code, so ask your chatbot provider for help with anything beyond the table above.

What should the chatbot know about your Squarespace site?

A chatbot is only as useful as the content it answers from. An AI chatbot reads your pages, so before you install it, make sure your services, prices, opening hours, delivery areas and policies are written as plain text on the site, not only inside images or PDFs. Our guide to knowledge base chatbots covers how to structure that content, and our help centre and FAQ use case shows which page types work best as sources.

Decide two more things up front: when the bot hands a conversation to you (see chatbot human handoff) and which visitor details it collects for lead capture.

If you want to see how this looks on your own site before choosing a provider, LuckPanda Chatbot builds a free preview from your website address with no account: it reads up to 50 pages and answers from them, and putting it on your site costs $4.99 a month (₹199 in India) for up to 10 websites.

Questions

Can I add a chatbot to Squarespace for free?

You can add a free chatbot only if your site is on Core, Plus or Advanced, because the Personal plan does not allow third-party scripts. The chatbot itself may have a free tier; Squarespace does not charge extra for Code Injection.

Does Squarespace have a built-in chatbot?

Squarespace has no built-in AI chatbot for site visitors. Its own Live Chat is for Squarespace customers contacting Squarespace support. A visitor chatbot comes from a third-party provider.

Will a chatbot slow down my Squarespace site?

A chatbot script in Footer Code Injection loads after your page content, so its effect on first paint is small. Avoid putting it in the Header field unless the provider requires it.

Does it work on Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1?

Yes. The Code Injection fields are the same in both versions; only the menu path differs (7.0: Settings > Advanced > Code Injection).

Can I show the chatbot on mobile only or hide it on some pages?

Use page-level injection to limit it to specific pages. Hiding it on mobile or on certain URLs is a setting in most chatbot dashboards rather than in Squarespace.
