Sales tax calculator

Pick a state to fill in its base sales tax rate, add the county and city rate if there is one, and enter the price. You can also work back from a price that already includes tax.

Calculation

State rate only; local taxes add more.

County and city, if any.

Total price with tax$107.25$100.00 + $7.25 sales tax at 7.25%
Price before tax$100.00
Sales tax at 7.25%$7.25
Total price$107.25

State rates only cover the state. Counties and cities often add more; enter that as the local rate. Rates change, so confirm with your state’s revenue department.

How to use the sales tax calculator

  1. Choose Add tax, or Price includes tax to work backwards.
  2. Enter the price.
  3. Pick the state, then add any local (county or city) rate.
  4. Read the sales tax and the total.

The sales tax formula

Sales tax = price × (state rate + local rate) ÷ 100. Total = price + sales tax. Working backwards, price before tax = total × 100 ÷ (100 + combined rate).

Example: a $250 order shipped to Chicago, Illinois. The state rate is 6.25%, and Cook County and Chicago add 4%, for 10.25% combined. Tax = $250 × 10.25 ÷ 100 = $25.63, total $275.63.

State sales tax rates

Statewide base rates used by the calculator. Local taxes add more in most states. Rates change; confirm with your state's revenue department before you rely on them.

Do you need to charge sales tax?

You collect sales tax in a state where you have nexus: a physical presence, or, since the 2018 Wayfair decision, enough sales into the state (often $100,000 a year). Many services and digital goods are taxed differently from physical goods, and selling to a reseller with a valid resale certificate is usually exempt.

Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the combined rate (state plus local) and divide by 100. At 7.25%, tax on $100 is $7.25, and the total is $107.25.

How do I find the price before sales tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 8.25%, $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 before tax.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaskan cities and boroughs charge a local sales tax.

Why is my receipt's rate higher than the state rate?

Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own rate. The combined rate is what applies at the point of sale, so a 6.25% state rate can be 8.25% or more locally.

Are these rates current?

They are statewide base rates as published by the states. Rates change, and some items (groceries, clothing, services) are taxed differently, so confirm with your state's revenue department.
