Credit notes

Reduce or reverse an invoice without editing it. A credit note is its own numbered document, posted to your books, that lowers what the client owes.

What you can do with credit notes

  • A separate number series for credit notes.
  • Lines, tax and currency in the same editor as invoices.
  • Posted to double-entry books when issued, so the original invoice stays as it was.
  • Reference the original invoice number in the notes; email it or share a client link.

Questions

When should I issue a credit note instead of cancelling?

Cancel an invoice that was issued in error and has no payment applied. Use a credit note for returns, discounts after the fact, or part of an invoice.

Does a credit note need tax lines?

Usually yes. Credit the tax in proportion to the amount credited so your tax records match.
