Remit to address: what it means on an invoice, with examples

A remit-to address is where a customer sends payment for an invoice. What it means, how it differs from billing address, what to include by country, and how to spot remit-to change scams.

On this page

TL;DR: A remit-to address is the place a customer sends payment for an invoice. It can be a street address, a PO box or a bank lockbox, and on electronic invoices it is usually extended with bank details. It is often different from the seller's office, billing or shipping address, and any change to it should be verified by phone before money moves.

A remit to address (also called a remittance address or "remit to" address) is the address printed on an invoice that tells the customer where to send payment. "Remit" means to send money in settlement of a debt, so "Remit to: Acme Ltd, PO Box 4410, Dallas, TX 75201" reads as "send the money here". It exists because many businesses process payments somewhere other than where they work: a finance office, an outsourced accounts receivable team or a bank lockbox.

What does remit to address mean on an invoice?

A remit-to address is the payment destination for that invoice, nothing more. It is not where goods ship, not the address tied to a credit card, and not necessarily the registered office. On a paper-and-cheque invoice it is a postal address. On an invoice paid by bank transfer, the "remit to" block usually holds the payee name and account details instead of, or as well as, a postal address.

Related terms you will see on the same document:

  • Remit payment or please remit: a formal way of saying "please pay".
  • Remittance: the payment itself.
  • Remittance advice: the note a customer sends with a payment listing which invoice numbers and amounts it covers, so the seller can match one lump-sum transfer to several invoices.
  • Remitter / remittee: the payer and the payee.

Is a remittance address the same as a billing address?

No. Four addresses commonly appear on business documents, and each does a different job.

AddressWhat it is forWho supplies itWhere it appears
Remit-to addressWhere payment is sentThe sellerInvoice footer or a "Remit to" box
Billing addressThe customer's address for the invoice and, on cards, for verificationThe buyer"Bill to" block
Shipping addressWhere goods are deliveredThe buyer"Ship to" block
Registered or business addressLegal and correspondence addressThe sellerLetterhead, often required by tax rules

For a freelancer working from home, all four may be the same address. For a company with a lockbox, the remit-to address is often a PO box in a different city from its head office.

When should a business use a separate remit-to address?

Use a separate remit-to address when payments would otherwise land somewhere that does not process them. Common cases:

  1. You receive cheques. In the US, B2B cheques are still common; a dedicated address keeps them away from general mail.
  2. You use a bank lockbox. A lockbox is a PO box run by your bank: the bank opens the envelopes, deposits the cheques and sends you the remittance data. You must print the lockbox address exactly in the format the bank gives you.
  3. Finance sits elsewhere. A shop in Pune whose accounts are handled in Mumbai, or a US subsidiary paid through a parent company.
  4. You factor your invoices. When a factoring company buys your receivables, the invoice must tell customers to pay the factor, so the remit-to address becomes the factor's.

If none of these apply, your business address and bank details are your remit-to details, and a separate field adds nothing.

What should the remit-to section include?

The remit-to section should contain everything a customer needs to pay without asking a question. What that is depends on how the customer will pay, which is usually set by the country.

Payment methodInclude in "Remit to"Format to check
Cheque (US, Canada)Payee name exactly as on the cheque, street or PO box, city, state, ZIPUSPS ZIP+4 for lockboxes
ACH or wire (US)Account name, bank name, ABA routing number, account numberRouting number is 9 digits
SEPA transfer (EU)Beneficiary name, IBAN, BICIBAN up to 34 characters, BIC 8 or 11
UK Faster PaymentsAccount name, sort code (6 digits), account number (8 digits)Confirmation of Payee name match
India NEFT/RTGS/UPIAccount name, account number, IFSC, UPI ID or QRIFSC is 11 characters
International wireBeneficiary name and address, IBAN or account number, SWIFT/BIC, intermediary bank if anyCharges code (OUR, SHA, BEN)

Speed differs by rail, which matters when you set due dates. A SEPA credit transfer must reach the payee's bank within 1 business day under EU Regulation 260/2012. India's NEFT runs 24x7 in 48 half-hourly batches, and RTGS is for amounts of ₹2 lakh and above (RBI NEFT FAQ). UK Faster Payments run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A cheque adds postal and clearing time on top of any of these.

Always add one line that tells the customer what reference to use, for example "Quote invoice INV-2026-118 as the payment reference". That single line does more for reconciliation than any address.

Before you print an IBAN, run it through an IBAN checker: a typo in a remit-to block is copied into every payment that follows.

What does a remit-to address look like? (examples)

US invoice paid by cheque, with a lockbox:

`` Remit to: Northwind Design Studio LLC PO Box 84210 Dallas, TX 75284-4210 Please write invoice number INV-1049 on your cheque. ``

India invoice paid by bank transfer or UPI:

`` Remit to: Account name: Northwind Design Studio Pvt Ltd Bank: State Bank of India, Andheri East A/c no: 00000012345678 IFSC: SBIN0000000 UPI: northwind@sbi Reference: INV/2026-27/118 ``

EU invoice paid by SEPA transfer:

`` Remit to: Beneficiary: Northwind Design Studio BV IBAN: NL91 ABNA 0417 1643 00 BIC: ABNANL2A Reference: 2026-0118 ``

These are example layouts. Northwind Design Studio is a sample business, and the account numbers are placeholders or published test values.

How do you set up or change a remit-to address?

Accounting systems store the remit-to address on the vendor record, and the field name matters. In Microsoft Dynamics AX, a vendor address can carry the purpose "Payment" or "Remit-To"; a Microsoft community answer notes that when cheques are printed and the payment address differs, the address type must be "Remit-To", otherwise the address does not print on the cheque. Other systems use "Pay-to vendor" or "Alternative payee" for the same idea: the company that receives the money differs from the one that supplied the goods.

On the selling side, put the remit-to details in your invoice settings once, so every document carries the same block in the same place. The free invoice generator has a payment details section that prints under the totals.

To change it without losing payments:

  1. Update the address or bank details in your invoicing system first, so new invoices carry the new block.
  2. Send customers a signed notice on letterhead, and phone your largest customers so they can verify it by calling back.
  3. Keep the old account or PO box open for at least 60 days (two monthly billing cycles) and forward anything that arrives there.
  4. Re-issue any open invoices that show the old details, or send a statement of account listing each invoice number, date and balance with the new details.

How do remit-to address scams work?

A remit-to address scam is a payment redirection fraud: a criminal poses as a supplier and asks the customer to "update the remit-to details" to a new bank account. It is a form of business email compromise (BEC). The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported $55.5 billion in exposed BEC losses across 305,033 incidents between October 2013 and December 2023, with a 9% rise in identified global exposed losses from December 2022 to December 2023 (IC3 PSA, September 2024).

The pattern is consistent: a real-looking email (often from a lookalike domain or a hacked mailbox), a plausible reason ("we changed banks", "our auditors moved accounts"), and urgency. The IC3 advice is to verify any request to change account information through a secondary channel or two-factor authentication.

Controls that work for small businesses:

  • Call back on a known number. Use the phone number already in your records, never the one in the email asking for the change.
  • Hold the first payment. Treat the first payment to new remit-to details as unverified until the supplier confirms receipt by phone.
  • Separate who edits and who pays. The person who changes a vendor's bank details should not be the person who releases the payment.
  • Use name-checking where it exists. UK banks run Confirmation of Payee; India's IMPS and UPI show the beneficiary name before you confirm.

What happens if a customer pays the wrong address?

A cheque sent to the wrong address is usually forwarded or returned, which delays payment but rarely loses it. A bank transfer to the wrong account is harder: the payer's bank has to request a recall, and recovery depends on the receiving bank and how fast the error is reported. Either way, the invoice stays outstanding until the money reaches you. Under UK rules, if no payment date was agreed, a business payment becomes late 30 days after the invoice or delivery, and the supplier can then claim statutory interest of 8% plus the Bank of England base rate (GOV.UK), which is one reason clear remit-to details protect both sides.

Questions

What is a remit to address?

A remit-to address is the address or account on an invoice where the customer should send payment. It can differ from the seller's office, billing and shipping addresses.

Is the remit to address the same as the billing address?

No. The billing address belongs to the buyer and identifies who is invoiced. The remit-to address belongs to the seller and says where the money goes.

Can a PO box be a remit to address?

Yes. PO boxes and bank lockboxes are common remit-to addresses, especially for cheque payments in the US.

What does "please remit payment" mean?

It means "please pay". "Remit" is the formal word for sending money to settle a bill, and it is usually followed by where to send it.

Do I need a remit to address if I only accept bank transfers?

You need remit-to details, not necessarily a postal address. For bank transfers, the payee name, account details and payment reference do the job.

How do I check a remit to change request is genuine?

Call the supplier on a number you already had on file, not one from the request, and confirm the change before paying. Treat urgency and new overseas accounts as warning signs.
