How a WhatsApp link works

A WhatsApp link, or click-to-chat link, opens a chat with your number without the customer saving it first. Its form is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format: country code and number, digits only, without the plus sign, leading zeros, brackets or dashes. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message to fill in the customer’s first message.

  1. Choose the countryThe form starts on your country. Change it if your WhatsApp number is from somewhere else.
  2. Type the numberType it the way you write it locally, spaces and all. The tool adds the country code and drops a leading 0.
  3. Add a first messageOptional. Write what a customer would say, so you know where the chat came from.

Writing your number in a WhatsApp link

Most broken links come from the number. The link needs the country code, then the number without the 0 you dial at home.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the leading 0: wa.me/4402079460958 will not find the number.
  • Leaving out the country code, so WhatsApp looks for the number in the wrong country.
  • Pasting a message with spaces and symbols straight after ?text=. It must be URL-encoded; the tool does it for you.
  • Linking a number that is not on WhatsApp, such as a landline that was never registered.
  • A long first message. One sentence is enough, and the customer can still edit it.

How do I create a WhatsApp link?

Use https://wa.me/ followed by your number in international format: the country code and the number, digits only, with no plus sign, leading zero, brackets or dashes. The generator above builds it from the number as you write it locally.

How do I add a message to a WhatsApp link?

Add ?text= after the number, then the message URL-encoded, so spaces become %20. The customer sees the message in the box and can edit it before sending.

Why does my WhatsApp link say the number is not on WhatsApp?

Usually the country code is missing, a leading 0 was kept, or the number is not registered on WhatsApp. Check the number in the link, then open it on your own phone.

Does a wa.me link expire?

No. It is a plain web address with your number in it, so it works as long as that number stays on WhatsApp. There is no account and nothing to renew.
